Stop the Noise

A quality improvement project to decrease electrocardiographic nuisance alarms

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to reduce the number of unnecessary ECG and pulse oximetry alarms in adult medical cardio-vascular care unit. The study question:- Can a bundled approach of interventions decrease the number of nuisance ECG alarm signals?

  • Stop the noise, a quality improvement study

    The quality process comprised the following elements

    - Eliminating duplicative alarms
    - Customising alarms
    - Changing electrocardiography electrodes daily
    - Standardising skin preparation
    - Using disposable electrocardiography leads

    These measures decreased the number of alarm signals by 88.5%
